CHILDCARE and EARLY LEARNING

It’s not easy to find good childcare. It is even harder if your child is disabled or has a special need. Sometimes you have to change childcare to fit in with your family. There is no one right answer.

Every child is entitled to fifteen hours of free early learning the term after their 3rd birthday. You can take this up with a childminder, a school nursery, a private or voluntary sector day nursery or a mixture of any of these. For more details about the free early learning for 3 and 4 year olds and early years pupil premium visit here.

Your child may also be entitled to fifteen hours of free early learning the term after their 2nd birthday. To find out more anbout the free ealry learning for two year olds and to apply visit here.

From September 2014 you are entitled to free two year old early learning if

  • your child has a statement of Special Education Needs, or
  • your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan or
  • you receive disability living allowance for your child.

Early Years funding

Early Years SEND Inclusion Fund

The Early Years Inclusion Fund is for early years providers to help them support the needs of individual children with lower level or emerging SEN.

Disability Access Fund

The Disability Access Fund (DAF) is funding for early years providers to support children aged 3 or 4 with disabilities or special educational needs. The funding is only available to chosen providers whose children meet the eligibility criteria. The aim of the DAF is to help give children who are disabled access to free childcare.

Lambeth children's centres with inclusive sessions

Lambeth Children's Centres offer a range of inclusive sessions for all children to attend. We also provide sessions with specialist input from health professionals and practitioners.

Jessop Children's Centre

Sensory Sensations

Thursdays 10am - 11:30am

A drop in stay and play session for babies and young children with complex needs. The group is supported by specialist speech and language therapists who come into the session on a rotated basis. This group provides the opportunity for parents to socialise with other parents and children to take part in fun learning activities. This is a referral only group, if you are interested in coming along or would like more information, please call the centre on 0207 737 5164.

Clapham Manor Children's Centre

Sensory Explorers

Fridays 9:30am to 11:30am

Sensory Explorers is a group for children under 3 who have complex needs. It runs every Friday morning throughout the year (except for centre closures) from 9.30 - 11.30 at Clapham Manor Children's Centre. The morning is structured, consisting of planned and organised play, a group snack time, a circle time and some free play in the sensory room. In order to get the most out of the session parents are encouraged to arrive at the start. A specialist speech therapist is on hand to provide support and advice and other therapists can make appointments to see families who attend.
Access to this group is by referral only. Referral may be made by any of the therapists working with a family, any children centre outreach worker, or Clapham Manor and Heathbrook children's centres staff. Siblings are welcome. Henry Fawcett Children's Centre

The children centre has a range of sessions available for babies and children. It also offers a fully equipped sensory room that is available for parents and practitioners to book and use on most days. Mary Sheridan Play and Stay sessions

5 Dugard Way, SE11 4TH

This is a drop in play and stay session for babies and children with a range of needs. All families are welcome and do not need a referral to attend. Sessions are facilitated by a skilled specialist outreach worker from the local Children Centre and has regular input from health professionals. EarlyBird parenting programme

Lambeth are pleased to be able to now offer the EarlyBird programme. It is a autism specific early intervention programme, developed by the National Autistic Society to empower and support parents and carers with a diagnoses of an autism spectrum disorder.

It is a three month programme built up of four home visits and eight 8 group practical workshops. It is designed to support children at the age of 5 or under with ASD. Programmes are currently run twice a year in children centres across the Lambeth Borough.

Early Years Enhanced Provision

Enhanced provision is additional resources the local authority has put into an early years nursery to support children whose needs cannot be met solely from within the nurseries resources. The provisions are for children with significant social and communication needs (either diagnosed with Autism or awaiting an autism assessment, complex developmental needs, or a combination of both). Your child will have to be accessing 3 or more specialist services and be known to the Early Years Alliance Team and aged between two and five years to be able to access the enhanced provision.
As of September 2016 Lambeth has 8 Enhanced early years nurseries that offer up to 4 places per nursery for children with significant needs.
